Join WXXI for Classical 91.5 Presents, a series that spotlights classical music connections in film.
Classical 91.5 Presents...Brief Encounter on Saturday November 18th, 3pm at The Little Theatre, with music by Rachmaninov in The Little Theatre Cafe performed by the Empire Film Music Ensemble starting at 2pm.
Brief Encounter is a 1945 British romantic drama film directed by David Lean about a woman whose conventional life becomes increasingly complicated because of a chance meeting at a railway station with a stranger. They inadvertently but quickly progress to an emotional love affair, which brings about unexpected consequences.
The film stars Celia Johnson, Trevor Howard, Stanley Holloway and Joyce Carey. The screenplay is by Noël Coward, based on his 1936 one-act play Still Life. Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto is woven throughout the soundtrack of the film. The screening will be followed by a discussion of the music and the film, with pianist Michael Landrum, Professor of Music and Film Studies at Roberts Wesleyan College, and WXXI's Mona Seghatoleslami.
