This time during Hispanic Heritage Month Concierto celebrates the accomplishments of Presidential Medal of Freedom winners Arturo Sandoval, Plácido Domingo and Pau Casals.

Esta vez durante el mes de la herencia hispana, Concierto celebra los logros de estos ganadores de la medalla presidencial de la libertad: Arturo Sandoval, Plácido Domingo y Pau Casals.

This time on Concierto the music ranges from traditional Spanish coplas sung by tenor Plácido Domingo, to a Mexican guitar sonata by Manuel Ponce, and Mozart performed live by the black and Latino musicians of the Sphinx Virtuosi. Frank Dominguez is your host.

This week Brazilian brothers Sergio and Odair Assad play a Tango Suite for Two Guitars by Astor Piazzolla, and Uruguayan conductor Carlos Kalmar leads the Symphonie espagnole by Edouard Lalo.

This week Concierto honors the “Father of Modern Mexican Song,” Manuel Ponce. Selections include his beloved standard Estrellita sung by Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez. In the second hour we salute Argentine pianist Martha Argerich displaying her artistry performing de Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain.

This week host Frank Dominguez explores the fado (a form of music characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics) and the modinha (a type of sentimental love song).

This week European vocalist Mariza sings an example of a Portuguese song form called “fado,” and then we’ll hear the Brazilian derivation, the modinha by Heitor Villa-Lobos. Frank Dominguez is your host.
