George Walker

On Monday, April 2, 2018 the Eastman School of Music will recognize the accomplishments, and celebrate the 95th birthday of composer George Theophilus Walker, the first black recipient of a doctoral degree from the Eastman School of Music.  The special Alumnus Recital (7:30 p.m. in Hatch Recital Hall) is free and open to the public.

Pulitzer-prize winning composer George Walker has written ten sonatas, two string quartets, and challenging concertos for piano, violin, cello, and trombone.   Last year he finished a new sinfonia.   What makes Walker’s latest creation so rare is that when he finished it, he was 94 years old.  Read Frank Oteri's profile here.
