Music In Our Schools Month 2017

Music In Our Schools Month® is an annual celebration during March which engages music educators, students, and communities from around the country in promoting the benefits of high quality music education programs in schools.

This year WXXI Classical 91.5 is joining the celebration with a variety of on-air and online content.

Classical 91.5 is partnering with the Rochester Education Foundation to collect musical instruments and supplies to provide used musical instruments for Rochester city students, increase city students' musical performance opportunities, support the purchase of musical instruments for in-school use, and provide summer music lessons for students. The program also provides new musical instruments to enable college-bound students to be successful.

Take in a musical or concert at one of the schools in our region.  Here's a comprehensive list of MIOSM celebrations in regional school districts.

For some kids, the most important music discoveries are made AFTER school.  Mexican-American violist, Alexander Peña directs an after-school and summer music education program in Rochester that provides tuition-free classical music and instrument instruction to urban youth in the neighborhoods in which they live.

Alexander Peña directs ROCMusic.  He was recorded on Backstage Pass, and you can hear the entire program – and performances from his students – online on Backstage Pass with Julia Figueras.

Music and art go hand in hand, and there’s a local art teacher who has a unique way of inspiring his students.   Art teacher Todd Stahl believes in the power of art – and every day he takes that spirit into his classroom in the Webster school district.  By treating his students as equals he empowers them to believe in their work. WXXI’s Sasha-Ann Simons has more.

Recently, WXXI’s Julia Figueras interviewed Ward Stare, the music director of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.  When Julia asked him to name a favorite teacher, he replied there were just too many to mention.

Ward Stare is Music Director of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.

This month, in the small, rural Byron-Bergen Jr. Sr. High School, an audience will see the world premiere of a new musical called “10 Again.”  It was written by the school’s choir director, Larry Tallman.   The students are pretty excited.  Tenth grader Stephanie Buell says being in high school musicals with Mr. Tallman has been a revelation.

Stephanie is also one of our Musicians of Rochester.

Sean Jefferson is a drummer, teacher, and the founder of the Rochester Contemporary School of Music.   He says it is important to make room for music and art in students’ busy lives.
